VUN has MER of 0.17%, NOT 0.15% which is just the underlying management fee. Quite steep given you can get XEQT for 0.20% MER which has diversified global stock market exposure.

This is their explanation:
> XEQT primarily accesses its broad market U.S. equity exposure using iShares Core S&P Total U.S. Stock Market ETF (ITOT), a U.S.-domiciled ETF. In certain circumstances, U.S.-domiciled ETFs such as ITOT are subject to limits on the sale of their shares to non-U.S. domiciled investment funds such as XEQT. Prior to July 2025, iShares Core S&P 500 Index ETF (XUS) had been held as an additional instrument for maintaining broad U.S. equity exposure when the aforementioned sales restriction applied to ITOT. Effective July 2, 2025, XEQT has replaced XUS with iShares Core S&P Total U.S. Stock Market Index ETF (XTOT). Going forward, XEQT is expected to hold a mix of XTOT and ITOT.

I don't really understand the rule, nor do I understand why adding another layer of indirection (XTOT) makes it okay to hold more ITOT. I'm curious if anyone knows more about this.

Buying XEQT or VEQT is the right way to go. If you want to add levers to your portfolio because you want to adjust the allocations to different markets and don’t mind the added complexity, take a look at the XEQT’s underlying funds and “make your own.” For example, XIC for Canadian equities, XUU for US, XEF for developed and XEC for emerging markets. Of course, this will require rebalancing on your own

Building an etf portfolio is typically unnecessary now because you can get all in one ETF's. Check out XEQT. My days of rebalancing etfs are gone baby gone.

No. You have to use the underlyings (or equivalent) and rebalance yourself. At this point might as well not have any XEQT, gonna be much easier to rebalance.
But what is your rationale? What information do you have that the biggest asset management firms in the world and their teams of PhDs don't have?

More advanced investors will not use XEQT or the like for the reasons you state. They want better control of the diversification. So, they hold individual index funds instead of the precooked XEQT fund of funds meal. The basic elements I would consider to brew your own mix are:
ZSP - S&P 500 index
XEF - International index without North America
XIU - Canadian TSX, and a more conservative alternative may be XDIV
The other advantage of individual index funds is that you can hold each of them in the accounts that have the best tax treatment. Some examples would be:
ZSP - TFSA, for full tax relief of a higher risk fund that should deliver above average return
XEF - RRSP/RRIF More conservative and diversified return for an account where the gains within are tax free, but gain at withdrawal are fully taxed at the highest rate.
XDIV - Best in a non sheltered account to take advantage of the Canadian dividend credits.

XEQT already represents global and all-sectors diversification.
By adding virtually any equity-based ETF (including the three others that you listed), you are doing the opposite of diversifying...  You're actually concentrating your investments, which is the opposite of your goal.
Stop playing with your money.  You're not investing, you're gambling.  Sell the other three funds and put it all in XEQT, then stop looking for more places to put your money.  If you actually want to diversify beyond XEQT, the only option is non-equity, such as fixed income (bonds/money market) or commodities.
And as others have pointed out, none of the funds you listed are even close to medium-low risk.

I mean, you could just use the underlying holdings in XEQT: XEF (EAFE, ex US/CA), XIC (TSX), XEC (emerging). The US holdings are ITOT and XUS (SP500).

I’m a big fan of all equity ETFs like VEQT and XEQT. However, I am hoping to find something similar with less US and more international (both developed and developing) exposure as a percentage of weighting. What are some ETFs that could fit this bill?

>I understand the XEQT is the most safe of them all, but i don’t want to put everything in XEQT
XEQT literally contains everything in TEC, VFV, and ZNQ.

Although I agree XEQT is a good investment, I don't think it's correct at all to call it medium-low risk. It's iShares' most volatile and highest risk ETF at 100% equities. XGRO is still high risk, XBAL is medium-ish.

I would recommend:
50% ZNQ - Ideally in TFSA due to the higher expected returns
25% XEF - Good in RRSP account as it is a lower risk lower return international fund
25% XDIV - Works well in non Sheltered account to take advantage of the dividend tax credit
No need to hold XEQT

All these funds have a substantial amount of overlap. Especially TEC and ZNQ, then XEQT and VFV. It's generally recommended for medium-low risk to just invest in XEQT. But if you insist on adding an additional etf I would add no more than 20% TEC. So 80% XEQT and 20% TEC only.

"High risk" is 100% equities. So just XEQT would be a fine portfolio. You could add cash or bonds or other "Safe" investments if you want to diversify away from 100% equities.

Right now I have investments in XEQT, TEC, VFV, ZNQ. What is a good percentage split for my investments in these that’s medium-low risk. i understand the XEQT is the most safe of them all, but i don’t want to put everything in XEQT. Also are there good international tech/other industry ETFs that are good to invest in?
My current split:
50% XEQT
20% ZNQ
10% VFV
20% TEC
Pretty new to investing, so open to any criticism/advice!

Readseal for which trade?
XEQT is definitely a good fund to "set and forget".
I would have some money set aside but $15K is a bit steep imo
Id have $5K emergency fund and invest the rest personally.
I personally want to take a higher risk than XEQT in exchange for more potential reward.
My portfolio, in no particular order, consists of:
- QQQM
- SMH
- SPY
- CCJ
- UNH
Yes I know there is considerable overlap between QQQM, SMH and SPY. But sometimes you gotta let your winners run

A bit over two weeks later, XTOT now has almost 900 million AUM because XEQT invested in it.
