The ones I have in taxable: SCHD, DGRO, QQQM, EPD, O and half dozen individual stocks which will eventually get folded into the ETFS and MLP.
I love MLPs like EPD - you’ll need to research, but basically the dividends are tax deferred until you sell the shares (units). You can end up basically tax free - then you die and just hand shares to next of kin. MLP dividends, like REITs, are not taxed at corporate level before being paid to you. This is why these type of investments have higher yields than regular stocks which have double taxation. You’ll get K-1 at the end of the year which your accountant will know what to do with.
You will want an accountant regardless of which investments you choose. Once you hit a certain level of dividends in your taxable account you’ll end up needing to pay estimated taxes each quarter because your paycheck withholdings won’t cover it. I pay $3500 or so a quarter between state and federal to cover the extra income from dividends and interest.

Curious as to what y'all are holding and why - especially if it's something out of the ordinary.
We all know about SCHD, DGRO, VYM, and the other mainstream dividend ETFs, as well as the covered call funds like JEPQ/JEPI, and QQQI/SPYI. Let's see if we can't point each other in the direction of something on the path less traveled.
To start - I own TDVI and IGLD.
IGLD is one of the gold funds that also provides income. It doesn't provide as many gains as something like GLD during a run-up but it does provide income. GOLY is a comparable fund but hasn't gained quite as much on a total return basis.
TDVI is a tech focused income fund. In terms of total return it has beaten QQQ/QQQM since its inception. The yield is a bit over 7% so it doesn't quite match QQQI in that regard however, again, in total returns it has done quite nicely.
Both of these have higher than average expense ratios. Are they worth it? In my mind, yes. TDVI in particular has beaten the S&P500 since inception. Its older brother TDIV(creative naming, right?) has as well. In my mind, if something has a higher ER but is a superior product it's worth it. That's part of why I don't own VXUS.
Anyway, looking forward to seeing what y'all have that might be off the beaten track - maybe we can all learn a thing or two.

I’m doing SPMO QQQM SMHX equal weighted. If I had to pick 1 it would be QQQM as it’s the most proven long term so that would give me the most peace of mind. I keep hearing SPMO and other momentum stocks can easily get it wrong and end up trailing S&P for months. SMHX is just semiconductors so too narrow to go all in on for me.

I think you can go VTI and either QQQM or SCHG. Don’t think you need both of them. A little bit of overlap isn’t going to kill you, like most Redditors will tell you.

I've been building my investment portfolio with a long-term horizon of 10-20 years. I plan to continue dollar-cost averaging annually. Here's my current allocation:
45% VOO
30% QQQM
15% AVUV
5% GLDM
5% Individual stocks (a mix of blue-chip and growth stocks)
I'm considering simplifying my portfolio by removing the 5% individual stocks and 5% GLDM (total 10%) to focus entirely on ETFs.
A few questions for the community:
What do you think of my current portfolio? Is the tech exposure (VOO + QQQ) too high?
Should I eliminate GLDM and individual stocks? If so, where would you reallocate the 10%?
Any other US-focused ETFs you'd recommend for a 10-20 year horizon?

Use SGOV in your Fidelity account. Better than any HYSA. Will also let you compare to benchmark.
Just buy VOO or QQQM on a weekly basis automatic. Whatever you can afford. Then work to increase that weekly auto. Don’t rely on self discipline. Set to auto. Accumulate. Sell when you have something urgent to pay for. Do this for a while, and you will see money is easy. Best of luck.

Thanks for the reply! I understand the snowball effect for dividend stocks but I'm still struggling to understand how compounding interest works for stocks like QQQM and NVDA. I'm aware that holding them on for a long time will be beneficial but just confused on how share price appreciation is related to compounding interest. To achieve compounding interest for these stocks, should I be making consistent investments yearly? Thanks for the help!

Move that money out of the savings account and at least put it in something that earns interest. My favorite ETF for that is $BOXX if you're going to hold for at least 1 year, currently earns \~4-5% per year.
I would encourage you to max out the Roth IRA. With a Roth, you can always withdraw your contributions. So if you need to buy a car and have no other cash, you can draw down the money you put in the Roth and let the gains keep growing.
For the investments in the Roth, VOO and QQQM are fine. If I could do it all over, I would have invested in SSO for more growth.

If this is in tax-advantaged accounts, you can sell at any time to change your portfolio.
While you do miss out on mid and small caps with SPLG, that's not actually a big deal in practice and so I would lump VTI in there as well (those two are much more similar than QQQM is to either).
>If we use cash to purchase VXUS would we have any blind spots?
Sure:
* us bonds
* ex-US bonds
* real estate
* commodities / precious metals
Not everyone needs to have all or even any of those though.

19 year old, work during the summers and plan to get a job on campus at college this upcoming year. Have saved a lot of money a most of it sits in a savings account that produces basically zero interest (50% of total cash). I also have a high yield savings account (30% of total cash). The remaining 20% is in a Roth IRA and I invest 100 dollars a month into it as of right now, also have a Schwab account which is invested into individual stocks and 2 ETFs (VOO and QQQM). No expenses, probably will have to buy a car in a couple years.
