I would argue you could do this with margin in any brokerage account- simply borrow on margin (today’s rates are ~5% at IBKR)
The returns in the market should outpace any interest you pay- the only issue is risk of margin call (which the ultra rich also technically have but since they’re borrowing such a small % it’s effectively 0 risk).
If you wanted to do this strategy I would ballpark a 2% withdrawal rate being a safe long term strategy with near 0 risk of a margin call- maybe I’ll run the numbers for real sometime and confirm

Does IBKR close your account if you never trade or top up anymore?

I'm 53 years old and have been daytrading since the summer of 1999, 6 months before the dot com crash, and no daytrading wasn't uncommon in 2012 haha. It was already super popular during the [dot.com](http://dot.com) boom. I know because I was caught up in the hype during that time. I started off trading using 56kbps dial up modems, and when ADSL became available, I thought I had gone to heaven. I used a new broker called Cybertrader that was like Robinhood before Robinhood existed, and was later bought by Charles Schwab, and then switched over to Interactive Brokers in the mid 2000s and have been with IBKR since then.
When I started trading the internet was consisted on super basic websites, there was no Reddit, no Twitter, Youtube didn't even exist at the time. I didn't know any other traders and had to teach myself how to trade using books, One of the first trader forums was Elite Trader, and you can still find some of my posts on there.

IBKR thinks we need to stick to this insanity... it's just beyond me. I'm using other more reliable platforms (Schwab, Fedelity,...). I just couldn't cope with IBKR anymore. They are so outdated and backwards - as if I'm in 1930, not 2025. I don't know how other people do it with them, but I'm out. All the best.

It really depends on what you value—**convenience** vs **sovereignty**.
Buying through IBKR (or any broker that uses Paxos) can feel safer for those already in traditional finance. You're dealing with a regulated entity, there's no stress of managing wallets, and everything stays in one portfolio view. But keep in mind: **you don't control the asset**. It’s more like IOU Bitcoin until you take custody.
On the other hand, buying through a crypto-native exchange and moving to your own wallet means **you actually own your BTC**. Yes, it's more hands-on, and yes, there's a learning curve—but it’s the core ethos of crypto: *not your keys, not your coins*.
So if you're just dipping your toes in and want an easier onramp, IBKR might make sense. But if you're in it for the long game, consider learning self-custody sooner than later. It’s empowering—and worth it.

I am in the US and I bought stock on the Tokyo stock exchange. I had 30k in USD and bought 15k of shares. Instead of IBKR using my usd balance, it kept me at 30k usd and created a negative 15k yen balance using margin.
I then had to manually convert the 15k usd to yen to satisfy the margin.

Can you explain this more? I've just been letting IBKR convert automatically but I don't want to be on any sort of margin

That should work, and get you the 15% treaty rate. I suggest you raise a support ticket with IBKR.

What does "non-registered" mean?

Iis not that you are dumb to trade futures, it is the small size of your account that’s the problem. IBKR are a top-tier broker and they expect at least a few thousands to be deposited with them. But you can choose other small more specialised brokers and you will be fine.

For anyone facing this issue, I had to change my plan from IBKR Lite to IBKR Pro. IBKR Lite is only for US customers. Since I moved from US to Canada last year and my account was linked, I was in the IBKR Lite plan until I switched to IBKR Pro. I can trade US stocks & ETFs in my RRSP now. :)

No better than interactive brokers, imho. I have tried them all t212 is really good as well, and degiro and xtb are both pretty good. IBKR is the best by far, both with features and prices. At least for my location.

For sure it do have something to do with dollar amount. IBKR enforces ruel 144 for everybody, not only affiliates. Depending on your position size (which correlates with dollar amounts...) you may be over the volume threshold or the outstanding shares threshold. They assume you are an affiliate until proven otherwise, and this is after you take a position. And no, the phase in the sign up process where you state who is your employer is not evidence enough, apparently.
Disgusting way to handle rule 144 by IBKR.

Can I withdraw cash if I am using margin with IBKR? I have a negative cash balance. Say for example I have $50,000 in equity, $10,000 margin maintenance and my cash balance is -$15,000.
My excess liquidity is $50,000 - $10,000 =$40,000.00
So my available for withdrawal should be:
Excess liquidity ($40,000) + cash balance (-$15,000) = $25,000 available for withdrawal… Correct?
Or does IBKR not allow you to withdrawal at all if you have a negative cash balance?

This is IG markets. I use them cause I can trade cfd’s on relative small amounts. Even though the commissions are higher than other brokers I don’t have to put 2K in my account like on IBKR.
Not sure if this is a good broker but it works well for me. If anyone has suggestions on better alternatives I’m open for it ofcourse.
