If you’re surprised by your available margin, you’re probably not ready to start using that line of credit.
To responsibly use your margin, you should make sure the asset (Investment) covers all your margin cost. Otherwise you’re setting yourself up for a Margin Call.
Similar to how a mortgage is for a house, and a car loan is for a car. Margin is for financing the purchase of stock.
Taking cash off your margin is the equivalent of a 2nd Mortgage/Heloc.
You are being your own bank, and the assets securing your ABL/SBL is your stock. You should have an understanding of how holding different stocks will increase/decrease your available buying power.
