Streamr's mission is to replace centralized message brokers with a global, decentralized peer-to-peer network for real-time data. By relying on cryptography instead of trust, the open-source network enables data sharing and monetization in IoT and smart cities, business consortia, individual crowd selling through Data Unions and the Web 3.0. The Streamr Network is a peer-to-peer (P2P) network for real-time data. It acts as a decentralized message broker, and enables applications and devices such as IoT sensors, connected cars, and "smart" gadgets to make available the data they are producing, as well as listen to incoming data from other applications and devices. Traditionally, such message brokering has been done by centralized cloud services, leading to vendor lock-in, compromised data confidentiality, and a requirement of trust. The Streamr Network relies on cryptography instead of trust to keep data confidential and to prove its origin, making the network neutral, open, permissionless, and secure. The network employs the publish/subscribe pattern. Messages published to a stream (also known as a topic) get delivered to all subscribers listening on that stream in real-time. The network is flexible enough to support many-to-many message brokering, as well as one-to-many, many-to-one, and one-to-one. The network can scale to millions of messages per second, in millions of individual streams. The Streamr Network consists of nodes called Brokers. Brokers interconnect to form P2P message passing topologies to produce the pub/sub messaging service. The Streamr Network operates alongside the Ethereum blockchain as a companion network. Ethereum accounts are used as identities on Streamr, and data payloads are signed with an Ethereum private key. While the data never gets written to the blockchain, this shared cryptography allows the network to interoperate well with Ethereum, using it for value transfer and as a registry of resources and permissions. Streamr DATAcoin, or DATA, is an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum blockchain. The token will be used on the Network layer for the node reward mechanism, staking, and reputation. It can also be used as a means of payment on the Streamr Marketplace and on Streamr Core. Streamr Network can readily be integrated to various data sources and applications via SDKs or directly via the API. SDKs are available for various languages such as JS, Java, and Python. There are also integrations to popular integration and analytics tools such as NodeRED, Apache Spark, and Apache Flink. In addition to the Streamr Network itself, the Streamr team has built a number of applications and frameworks that enable the application of the technology for particular use cases. These include the Marketplace application for data monetization, the Ethereum layer 2 scaling solution Monoplasma for scalable revenue sharing, Streamr Core for building integrations and analytics and the Data Unions framework for crowd selling user data. Using the Monoplasma technology Data Unions make it possible that, for the first time, people who produce data can be directly remunerated in a scalable way.
