Cartesi - "The Blockchain OS" is a decentralized Layer-2 infrastructure that supports Linux and mainstream software components. For the first time, developers can code scalable smart contracts with rich software tools, libraries, and the services they're used to, bridging the gap between mainstream software and blockchain. Cartesi is enabling millions of new startups and their developers to use The Blockchain OS and bring Linux applications on board. With a Linux virtual machine, optimistic rollups, and side-chains, Cartesi paves the way for developers of all kinds, to build the next generation of blockchain apps. Cartesi is a Layer-2 platform for the development and deployment of decentralized applications (dApps). It employs a hybrid application architecture that includes both on-chain and off-chain components to helps its network scale. The on-chain component runs on a network of Cartesi Nodes, each representing an application user's interests. The off-chain components are further divided into two categories: Native and Reproducible. Native components run directly in the host hardware. These components have access to the node's full processing power, but the computations are not reproducible. Reproducible components run inside Cartesi Machines that Cartesi Node controls. Moving computations off-chain brings several advantages beyond scalability. Cartesi Machines enable developers to use more commonly known programming languages, tools, libraries, software, and services compared to Ethereum's Solidity. A Cartesi application can specify reproducible off-chain computations within the blockchain to be performed over large amounts of off-chain data. Cartesi Nodes can automatically follow these specifications to perform the computations off-chain. Application developers can instruct Cartesi nodes to submit results or verify and dispute results submitted by others. From the network's perspective, the resources required to process undisputed results are negligible. Disputed results come with a settlement cost that is a function of the storage and time required to execute the request. Cartesi Nodes The Cartesi Node is the software and hardware infrastructure that hosts the off-chain components of Cartesi applications. They also enable the interaction between an application's off-chain and on-chain components. Each user that interacts with a Cartesi app must have a Cartesi Node at their disposal. Applications can include native off-chain components that access the node's full storage and computational power. All nodes contain a reference implementation of the Cartesi Machine (more below) that applications can control to perform computations. Cartesi Machine The Cartesi Machine is Cartesi's solution for verifiable computation. They are the components that host and process application information. Cartesi Machines run off-chain and are not subject to the consensus mechanisms of their underlying blockchain layers. The use of off-chain computation allows Cartesi to process and store information at a lower rate compared to solutions that are fully reliant on on-chain computation. Once a Cartesi Machines executes an application request, it reports the results on-chain. Cartesi's Layer-2 solutions then rely on an "automatic dispute mechanism" to settle any discrepancies or disagreements that might arise from these off-chain computations. Catesi's automatic dispute mechanism requires that Cartesi Machines exhibit three properties: they must be self-contained (run in isolation from external influence), reproducible, and transparent (their full state is exposed for inspection). From an architecture perspective, Cartesi Machines are based on RISC-V. This architecture choice allows Cartesi to support a Linux development environment, which gives developers access to a commonly used set of programming languages and tools.
