The Casper Network is a decentralized, layer one Proof-of-Stake (PoS) blockchain optimized for enterprise and developer adoption. It is the first live blockchain built off the Correct-by-Construction (CBC) Casper specification. Casper is a proof-of-stake blockchain that uses a novel consensus protocol called Highway. The Highway protocol is the first and only provably live and safe protocol based on the CBC Casper specification, which was first introduced by the founding Ethereum team as an evolutionary security standard for future blockchains, with the express goal of replacing Proof of Work with Proof of Stake. The public protocol is operated by community validators that bid for an open slot in the validator auction. The on chain auction runs at the end of every era (~ 2 hrs) and selects the top 100 validators by stake. Token holders that wish to participate in the protocol delegate their CSPR to a validator of their choice - effectively 'voting for' their validator in the auction. In exchange for providing security to the network, the protocol algorithmically mints new CSPR at a rate of 8% of total supply and distributes this new CSPR to validators and delegators according to their stake. Validators accept transactions and include these transactions in a block when selected as leader by the consensus mechanism. Only after the network has finalized a block are transactions executed by the validators. The blockchain supports smart contracts that compile to Wasm (Webassembly) and provides many convenience functions in the host that are purpose built for enterprise use cases, such as upgradeable smart contracts, powerful accounts that support complex permissioning schemes and multiple contexts for code execution (account or contract). Of note, developers building on Casper do not need to know Solidity. The network uses asymmetric key cryptography to sign transactions and supports both ed25519 and secp256k1 key types - to provide compatibility with Ethereum keys.
